Why >99% Purity Matters — and Why We Won't Sell Less
Purity is a reproducibility control: every unintended molecule in a vial is a variable the researcher did not choose.
Purity is not a marketing number. It is a statement about how many other molecules are in the vial besides the one on the label — and every one of those other molecules is a variable you did not choose to add to your experiment.
A synthetic peptide is built one residue at a time on a resin. The chemistry is good, but it is never perfect, and the imperfections have names. Deletion and truncated sequences appear when a coupling step does not go to completion and the chain is missing a residue. Insertion sequences appear when a residue is added twice. Incomplete Fmoc deprotection can racemize a residue, producing a diastereomer — same mass, different molecule, potentially different behavior. Side chains that were not fully deprotected leave protection adducts. Then there are the non-peptide passengers: trifluoroacetate counter-ions left over from synthesis and purification, scavengers and residual solvent, and dimers and higher aggregates formed through stray cysteines or oxidation.
Those impurities can influence early functionality studies and produce erroneous conclusions. A deletion sequence can retain partial binding and blunt a dose-response. A diastereomer can be inert and dilute apparent potency. Residual trifluoroacetate can perturb sensitive cell assays. Aggregates can read as activity — or as toxicity — that the intended peptide never had. Every percentage point of impurity is noise injected upstream of the data, and it cannot be subtracted afterward when its composition is unknown.
Purity is therefore a reproducibility instrument. When a lot is >99% pure, the intended molecule is, to a useful approximation, the dominant molecule being studied. At 95%, one in twenty molecules is something else — and when the lot changes, that 'something else' can change too.
That is why >99% is our floor, not our aspiration. The alternative is to provide a controlled amount of the requested compound plus an uncontrolled amount of compounds the researcher did not request. That uncertainty belongs to the experiment, and the experiment is the point.
